Born to Lead #2 – Lt. Surge

Cody

185px-HeartGold_SoulSilver_Lt_SurgeWelcome to “Born to Lead”, a weekly segment where I talk about one of the many Gym Leaders of the Pokemon world. We’ll be covering the bio, team, and pieces of random trivia that each leader has to offer across the main series games in which they were introduced.

This week, we have the honor of covering a war hero! What war exactly? Well, we don’t really know, and just the fact that apparently the USA was a part of it makes everything even more confusing. Regardless, we’re having a look at Lt. Surge, leader of the Vermillion Gym in the region of Kanto. If you have any questions, comments, or requests, please leave them below.

First up is none other than Whitney, the leader of the Goldenrod Gym in the region of Johto. Why Whitney first? It may or may not have to do with a certain cow that’s infuriated trainers beyond belief for over a decade. If you have any questions, comments, or requests, please leave them below.

One of the most unforgettable things about Pokémon are the battles. Not just any ordinary battles; battles with the all-mighty Pokémon of Legend! Unlike regular Pokémon encountered in the wild, there is only one of each Legendary Pokémon: one chance is all you get or they’re gone for good (most of the time). What’s also special about this is the unique music that plays for each one. It’s not as dramatic as it seems but Game Freak sure knows up to amp up an important battle with the soundtrack! Hit the jump for 10 notable Legendary Themes from all of the regions of Pokémon!

What Was Your Very First Pokemon?

Hachi

firstpokemon2 No matter what generation we started playing the main series Pokemon games, we all had to decide what partner to start our Pokemon journey with. There is a lot to take into consideration when choosing a starter Pokemon besides just type preferences and looks. It can determine how easy or difficult your journey will be for the first few gyms. Some starters even have a secondary type added when they evolve, which brings with it new strengths and weaknesses to deal with. However, for most of us during our very first playthrough of Pokemon, none of that really mattered. The most important trait, regardless of strength or downfalls, was that we liked them.

Why Won’t It Just Die?!

Freddy

You might be looking at the title of this piece and think “How can you say that!” “After all of the praise and adoration lavished on the Pokemon Franchise, are you now turning your back and condemning its success?!” Quite the contrary, it is its continued success in the midst of its own downfall that has me wondering “Why won’t it just die?!” Read more…

The Magic of the First Generation(s)

Freddy

There’s something about the original Pokémon… Even beyond the Gameboy games or the anime; the original series as a whole I find had something going for it that was sorely missing in the latter entries encompassing the show and portable games, something beyond a simple sense of nostalgia and reminiscing. The original series gave players a clear and distinct directive of “Gotta Catch ‘em All”, an iconic tag-line that was quietly dropped but one generation after its inception. The directive to “Catch ‘em all” more than likely was dropped due to the sheer impossibility of obtaining the 400+ Pocket Monsters as the franchise continued to grow. This is but one of the reasons why the original series is held in such high esteem even to this day: it was a simpler, more approachable –and thus rewarding– affair. Read more…

Nintendo of America was notorious back in the 80’s for it’s terrible translation team, but what about Nintendo of Vietnam in 2000?

YouTube user DeliciousCinnamon has obtained a bootleg copy of Vietnam Pokémon Crystal and has documented the game with their own comentary.

It’s very, very funny and I encourage you all to watch it. Pokémon has never cussed, but Nintendo of Vietman thought zero just wasn’t enough! That’s right, viewer discretion advised, as (despite the context not making any sense) it does have some swearing.
