Pokémon Emerald Version walkthrough - Knuckle Badge

v

Rustboro City

Knuckle Badge

Once you exit the gym, head down to the Pokémon Center to rest up. Next door to the Pokémon Center is a house known as the Cutter House. Head inside and talk to the man to get HM01 Cut. You will need to teach this move to a Pokémon. If none of your Pokémon other than your starter can learn it, you will need to catch a Pokémon that can. A good choice would be something like Zigzagoon, which may learn cut and is easy to catch. Once you have this, you may continue onto Route 116, but first we will grab a couple more items.

Head into the Trainer School, which is to the east of the Pokémon Center. Speak to the teacher at the top of the room and you will get the Quick Claw. Next, head into the apartment building in the south-eastern corner of the city. Go up to the 2nd floor and speak to a boy here to get a Premier Ball. Now it is time to head out onto Route 116, so leave through the north-eastern exit.

v

Route 116

Knuckle Badge

Keep moving east on this route and defeat all of the trainers. Grab the repel that is lying on the ground in the southern pathway. Be careful, as you can initiate double battles by having two trainers see you at the same time. If you want to avoid this, just make sure that you aren't spotted by two at once. When you reach the house, head up and left towards the maze. Click on the small trees, and if you have a Pokémon with cut, they will use the ability to clear the trees. Make your way through the maze, defeating all of the the trainers and grabbing Ether and the berries.

Once you are done that, attempt to head into the cave at the eastern end of the route. An old man will tell you that his Pokémon Peeko was taken by Team Aqua. Head into the cave and go up, grabbing the Pokeball. Then head left and fight the Team Aqua Grunt. Defeat him (which is easy), and he will give you the Devon Package and then run off. Exit the cave, and the old man will thank you for returning Peeko to him. Next, take the package back to Rustboro. You will be stopped by the man whom you met in Petalburg Woods, and he will give you another Great Ball. He will then take you to the Devon Corporation offices to meet Mr. Stone, the president. He will thank you for your hard work, and ask you to deliver the package to Slateport and a letter to Steven in Dewford. What a lazy guy. However, he will give you a neat little device known as the PokeNav. This may be used to view a map , among other things.

Once you are done speaking to him, head down all of the floors of the building and out the front door. You will be stopped by a Devon scientist, who will install a new app onto your PokeNav. This will allow you to record the numbers of certain trainers and rematch them at a latter date. You will be asked to call Mr. Stone to test this, so simply go into your PokeNav and select the "Match Call" function. Once you have completed this, it is time to go to Dewford. Attempt to leave Rustboro to the south and you will be stopped by your rival. He/she will register you on their PokeNav, an then ask if you would like to battle. It is optional, however this guide will be covering it.

This battle is a bit more difficult. As a general rule, try and use Pokémon and moves that are effective against the Pokémon you are fighting. If you don't have Pokémon that are effective against the enemy, or are weak to the enemy, then just try and beat them down with your strongest attack, and don't get hit. If you need to, use potions and other items to keep your Pokémon from dying. It is possible to play through most all of the game without using a Pokémon other than your starter, though it is generally easier and more rewarding to level a well rounded and powerful team of Pokémon that compliment each other.

v

Route 104

Knuckle Badge

Once you have defeated your rival, or opted not to, continue heading south onto Route 104. Go across the bride and make a right, using cut on the small tree to grab the Dire Hit. Next, march on into Petalburg Woods and use cut on the trees to your immediate right. Travel east and speak to the girl to get a Miracle Seed. Continue south, grabbing the X-Attack and leaving through the south-eastern exit. Grab the Pokeball here if you haven't already, and hop down.

Go inside the small house that we previously ignored and speak to the man here. You may recognize him as Mr. Briney, the old man who's Wingull Peeko we saved from Team Aqua earlier. Speak to him and after a short conversation he will ask if you would like to sail to Dewford. If you're done here for now, select "Yes". You will be taken outside and onto Mr. Briney's boat. The boat will sail down many water routes, and you will see a lot of things. Ignore them all for now, as we will be returning to these routes with the proper prerequisites later in the game. About half way though the ride you will receive a call from your Dad, who will ask how you are doing. He will also be registered on your PokéNav.

v

Dewford Town

Knuckle Badge

Welcome to Dewford Town. This is a small coastal town, and there is not much here other than the Gym. We will be getting to that right away, but first talk to the fisherman here and confirm that you do infact enjoy fishing to get the Old Rod. He will then explain how to use it. Next, enter the house next to the Pokémon Center and talk with the person here to get the Silk Scarf. Once you are ready, heal up and head into the gym.

This gym puzzle is also quite easy. The room is initially very dark, other than a small circle around your character. To light up the room more, you must defeat trainers. Begin by heading up, and then right. Defeat the trainer that should spot you and continue up, hugging the right wall. Go up this passage and defeat the two trainers at the end in a double-battle. Next, go back down the way you came, but this time hug the left wall until you can make a right. Go this way and defeat the trainer at the end of the passage. Return the way you came and head up this time, defeating the two trainers that should be plainly visible now. Continue left until you reach the Gym Leader, Brawly. Heal up your Pokémon, save before the fight, and then challenge him!

 Leader Brawly

This battle is significantly more difficult than the previous gym battle. Brawly is probably the easiest if you picked Torchic, as by this point you should have Peck, which is very effective against fighting-types. Otherwise, this battle is going to prove to be quite difficult. Just keep hiting his Pokémon with your strongest attacks. You will likely have to use potions.

If you are not content with this tactic, you may train up a Pokémon such as Taillow, Wingull, or Ralts. All of their types are super-effective against fighting, and they are fairly easy to get and train up to the proper level.

Once you have defeated Brawly, he will award you with the Knuckle Badge and TM08 Bulk Up. Congratulations!
